As you know by now, the theme of this course is using your education (the skills, knowledge, and mindsets you have gained through your educational journey) to create positive change in the world. For this project, you are going to start with a massive, large-scale global problem, consider the previous literature on the topic, and propose your own solution in your final paper due at the end of Module 7. Start by asking yourself, “What problem do I want to help solve?”
In this module, you will be choosing an appropriate global problem, doing some preliminary research, and thinking about it. This step is required to get your instructor’s feedback on the appropriateness of your topic before you can move forward.
Begin by reviewing the scope of the final project, and then follow the steps below.
Step 1: Read about what constitutes a global problem
Begin by reading the following resources:

What is a wicked problem? (Links to an external site.) (Plymouth State University, n.d.)
Step 2: Find your passion
Your topic should be something you are passionate about. It must be connected to your learning journey and/or your professional plans. Consider the courses you have taken in the past, your previous work experience, and your career plans going forward. Then, consider how global issues or problems relate to these experiences or your future professional plans.
Step 3: Decide on a global problem and do some preliminary background research
Once you have settled on a preliminary global problem topic idea, search the topic in the Excelsior Library (Links to an external site.), trying different keyword search permutations to get the best results.
Rather than only searching for peer-reviewed journal articles or e-books at this stage, you may also find it helpful to read background information (Links to an external site.) from encyclopedias or background research databases like CQ Researcher. You will probably not end up using these background sources in your final paper, but they are a good way to get a broad and basic understanding of your topic first, before moving on to more specialized research. Read at least 3 articles or encyclopedia entries on your topic to gain enough insight into it for this stage of the research process.
Notes:
Your chosen topic CANNOT be the same topic you selected for your Cornerstone course or a topic you worked on for any other previous courses. If you have questions about this, please check with your instructor.
The topic of “access to safe water” is used as an example in this course and may NOT be selected as a topic by students.
Step 4: Consider the impact of cultural diversity on your global problem
Cultural diversity plays a role in all global problems. But what does this mean, exactly? Read the following resources about what cultural diversity means and how it impacts society and relationships between communities and individuals.

World day for cultural diversity for dialogue and development (Links to an external site.) (United Nations, n.d.)
Hofstede’s cultural dimensions and differences across cultures (Links to an external site.) (Oxford University Press, 2017)
Note: We will discuss Hofstede’s 6 Cultural Dimensions more as the course continues; this is a basic primer on the idea.
Then, do some preliminary research in the library on how cultural diversity impacts your topic and consider the following questions:
How does cultural diversity change or influence the problem you want to solve?
How does your own cultural background impact your own biases and understanding of the problem?
How does this global problem impact various cultures, groups, and communities differently?
How do various cultures view this problem differently?
Do all individuals and all cultures have equal opportunities to impact and solve your chosen global problem?
Where and why are ideas about your topic minimized on a global scale?
How does examining ideas on your topic from multiple cultures change the way you might think about it?
Step 5: Complete and submit the topic proposal worksheet by the end of Module 1

This assignment is due at the end of Module 1. It is ungraded but required so your instructor can provide feedback about the feasibility of your topic. This assignment must be complete before you will be graded for your next Milestone.
