Stein’s poetry works like Cubist art—it depends on creating depth and dimension through play on multiple meanings of words and constantly reconfiguring relationships among words. With that in mind, your assignment is to write an essay that focuses on two parts of Tender Buttons. By parts, I do not mean the large sections of Objects, Food, Rooms but instead two of the poetic parts (the individual poems, if you will–it is difficult to apply terminology to this experimental book). The essay must be at least five pages, typed, double-spaced, and submitted as a Word document.
The essay must work through different meanings of words in the text toward a synthesis of those words and ultimately a synthesizing, comparing, and contrasting of the two parts to one another with an eye toward a defining of the book as a whole. It is imperative that you push below the surface of the text into its deeper dimensions. Allow yourself to play in the language, letting it lead you to startling insights and realizations.
While this is not a formal paper, this essay does need to have an introduction, body, and conclusion. Feel free to be creative in your approach, but do not forget to follow the rules of grammar and spelling (if you present a sentence fragment as a sentence, make sure it is for truly good reason). The grade (0-100) will be based on depth of insight, creativity of approach, and effective presentation, including grammar and spelling.
