Each of you come to doctoral studies with an abundance of education and practice experience. Experience alone does not promote social justice or social change (Lay & McGuire, 2010). As social workers we must be willing to engage in critical reflection, challenging assumptions and analyzing power dynamics in our practice with the knowledge base and vice-versa, challenging the assumptions and knowledge base of research with our practice wisdom.
The purpose of this ongoing exercise is to provide you with a space to reflect on the course materials and explore implications and/or applications to social work practice. This will be an ongoing dyadic process between you and the instructor.
Module Three Prompt: Temperature Check
Consider the materials you have read thus far in the course. How has your thinking about the science of social work and it’s relationship to social work practice been impacted? Which paradigm of inquiry resonates with you and why? What implications does this have on your practice?
Respond to the prompt above in one (1) to three (3) pages. Note that this is a reflection log grounded in your course materials. As delineated in the rubric, you want to demonstrate critical thought by making insightful connections between the course readings and practice, building upon the learning with your practice experiences.
